We are almost at the end of the ball of string.
The problem almost certainly lay at the feet of the network provider where my server resides. The network MTU settings on the server nic and the switch were different. This was causing network instability. I dont understand why some messages failed and other succeeded, but after making that change ti the nic configuration all is good (at least over the last hour and over 1000 messages.
I will circle back and incorporate all your suggested improvements. Thanks again for your assistance, and as always I have learned a great deal from your assistance.
