IW 15 and 17 share the same server controller class. So, for now, this is unchanged.
Regarding critical section for DB access. You better have a dedicated connection to your DB per session. A good place to put a DB connection is in your UserSession module or in a datamodule owned by it.
Let the DB server handle concurrency for you

In case you have much more users than available DB connections you can use a DB connection pool which also handles this problem for you
