https certificate mismatch

I have a client who wanted https, so they sent me their certificates to test with.

When I test on my local machine my browser tells me that 127.0.0.1 is not the same as the URL in the certificate.
Fair enough - 127.0.0.1 is not the URL.
If I create an exception for 127.0.0.1 it works - albeit with a not secure warning.

So I shipped it to the client.

The issue that the client is having is the same issue.
The URL is resolved into an IP address, and then the browser is saying that the IP address is not the same as the URL.

Is there some property that I have not set correctly? or there something not set up correctly on their server?

Where did you create the "exception for 127.0.0.1"?

Certificates are tied to domain names, not IPs.

I don't know if I am explaining this correctly.

When I type www.the.url in the browsers address bar, the DNS resolves it to <IP Address> and the IW application returns the web page.

However the browser tells me that <IP Address> is not the same as www.the.url.

Is there a property in the IW application that I missed? or is there something not set up correctly on the server.

ie. Is this my problem that I must fix in my code? or something the clients IT guy must sort out?

I don't know if I am explaining this correctly.

When I type www.the.url in the browsers address bar, the DNS resolves it to <IP Address> and the IW application returns the web page.

However the browser tells me that <IP Address> is not the same as www.the.url.

Is there a property in the IW application that I missed? or is there something not set up correctly on the server.

ie. Is this my problem that I must fix in my code? or something the clients IT guy must sort out?


The certificate has to match the dns name.

For example, if the dns is www.the.url then the certificate must be generated for www.the.url.    It has nothing to do with Ip addresses.

I'll see if I can try explain this another way, because I don't think you are understanding what I am trying to convey. (That's on me).

I open a new tab in my browser, and type in the URL in the address bar https://www.the.url and I press enter.

everything works the way I expect it to and the IW application provides the web page.

However, the address bar in now says https://<IP address>

And the browser is telling me that <IP address> is not the same as www.the.url.

It is almost as if the IW Application has redirected me way from www.the.url to <IP Address>

Fair enough - 127.0.0.1 is not the URL.
If I create an exception for 127.0.0.1 it works - albeit with a not secure warning.

In order to run a proper test, edit your Windows hosts file (typical path is "C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts").

Add one entry to it like:

    127.0.0.1    thedomain.com

Now, every time you try to access "thedomain.com", you will be redirected (by Windows itself) to 127.0.0.1 which will hit your application.

Have in mind that some AV software won't let anyone edit the hosts file, so you might have to disable it before. Also, remember to undo this change otherwise you won't be able to access the real "thedomain.com" later on.

This is the easiest and recommended way to test a real certificate in your development machine.

Now, back to your question. IW does not redirect from host to IP address internally, unless you have changed a few default configurations in a very unusual way.

I recommend you to run the test above as I mentioned and see how it goes.

editing my hosts file got it to work perfectly when testing on my machine.

However, I still have the issue when using the URL to connect to the clients server.

When looking at the Chrome debug console - it looks to me as if there is a redirect.
I can't seem to figure out how to embed images to my reply so here is a link to imgur. https://imgur.com/a/PJorZlv

So I am guessing that this is an issue with the configuration on the clients server.

The response is in the Response headers where you read:

Server: Nginx/1.16.1

Nginx is not only adding fields to the header but also translating the host name into the IP address...
