Faculty / Advisor / Student Web Information System

“IntraWeb allowed us to develop and deploy the Faculty/Advisor/Student Web Information System in a timeframe unheard of with traditional development tools and methods.  The predecessor to the Web Information System took months to develop and was limited to user account management.  The new system is fast, flexible and user friendly.  The users absolutely love it!”

Independence Community College

Independence Community College (http://www.indycc.edu) is located on a beautiful 68 acre campus in Independence, Kansas and was ranked the #56 Most Wired 2-Year College in the 2000 Yahoo! Internet Life survey of Computing in Higher Education.  The college has 100 full time employees, over 200 part-time and adjunct employees and a student body of 1200.

Situation

With 1,500 users, 350 computers and an IT staff of only three, Independence Community College needed a way to automate day-to-day operations of user account and e-mail account management as well as to provide timely and accurate information to its faculty, advisors and students.  The system needed to be simple to use, easy to update and secure.

Solution

IntraWeb allowed Independence Community College to create a system that is user friendly, flexible and secure.  New functionality is added on a regular basis at the request of the users.  Because the system is completely web based, there is no need to update the client computers when the application is changed and it allows its users to have access to their information from anywhere.

Implementation

The Web Information System consists of over 40 screens, with dynamically constructed menus providing relevant options to authorized users.  When a user logs into the system, it queries the backend DB2/400 database to determine if the user is a current student, former student, faculty member, adjunct faculty member or advisor.   Since it is possible to be a combination of these options, the user is presented with a menu that fits their role precisely.  Students and adjunct faculty members are given the option to create their own windows user accounts and e-mail accounts.  When the user account is created, an expiration date is set.  This allows periodic culling of expired accounts and helps maintain security.  Students can view their class schedule, their progress indicators, their grades/transcript and their statement of account.  Faculty and adjunct faculty are given the option to view their class schedules and can drill into the schedule to see the class list.  From the class list, they can click on a student name and view the schedule, grades and placement information for that student.  Advisors get a list of the people they advise, and can also view the schedule, grades, progress indicators and placement information for the students.

Impact

The Web Information System has saved countless hours of account creation and management and is a huge hit with all of its users.

The application can be seen in the Customer Demos.
