XII – Browser Support

XII – Browser Support

To move IntraWeb forward we must remove support for older browsers. We had planned to support a certain level of browsers, but recently Google announced that they too would be dropping support for older browsers. This move by Google allows us to further adapt our policy and allow us to both move IntraWeb forward and elimiante a lot of older code.

Google

Google has announced their support policy for browser which will be effective August 1, 2011:

In short, Google will only support the latest major version of a browser, and one release before it. That means, as of August 1, Google will only support:

  • Firefox 3.6+
  • Internet Explorer 8+
  • Safari 4+
  • Chrome 11+
  • Opera – No mention by Google

Browser Statistics

Statistics with regard to browser usage and versions can be seen here:

IntraWeb XII

For IntraWeb XII, we plan to follow the same support plan as Google closely, with a few exceptions:

  • Firefox 3.6+
  • Internet Explorer 8+
  • Safari 5+
  • Chrome 11+
  • Opera 11+

Safari

The reason for supporting only Safari 5 is two fold. First, older Safari versions have some pretty nasty bugs and Safari already is a low percentage browser. However it is the browser of Apple users and necessary to support. Secondly, looking at Safari’s numbers show little need to support Safari 4:

2011 Total Safari
Safari 5 Safari 4 Safari 3 May 4.0 % 3.6 % 0.3 % 0.1 %

Opera

Opera’s numbers are very small. We will support Opera in “tolerance mode” for Opera 11. IntraWeb XII will recognize and accept Opera, but only basic investment in testing and support will be offered.

2011 Total Opera
 Opera 11 Opera 10 Opera Mini May 2.4 % 1.8 % 0.2 % 0.4 % April 2.6 % 1.9 % 0.2 % 0.4 % March 2.5 % 1.9 % 0.2 % 0.3 %
