Manly West State School – SmartER Community Access

The development of SmartER Net (Smart Education Resources Network) would not have been possible within such blazingly fast timeframes without the use of IntraWeb.  IntraWeb delivers robust and flexible leading edge technologies to the hands of the part time developer.  The support offered by the members of the IntraWeb team is unparalleled.”

Manly West State School

Manly West State School is a state run and funded primary (ages 4 to 12) school.  It is situated overlooking the beautiful Moreton Bay in the eastern suburbs of Brisbane, Australia.  The school has 450 students, 30 teaching and associated staff and an extensive parent community.

Situation

Funding for a state run primary school is always an issue.  There is never enough of it!  Time for technology development is the same as funding.  Web development at Manly West State School has been carried out by the school Principal in the hours outside the school day.  The need to be able to deliver to the school community information that is accurate, responsive, secure and timely had long been recognised.  The challenge was to find a way to meet this need without the luxury of time and money.

Solution

The discovery of IntraWeb enabled the realisation of a vision that had previously been trapped as a dream.  Previous attempts to deliver web information to users with a professional interface had met with very limited success.  The major limiting factor was the lack of development time available.  IntraWeb changed all that.

Implementation

SmartER Net is a database driven application.  Staff, students and parents have access to different features based on their log in status and security level.  Staff can access information across a range of databases including behaviour management, resources, timetabling and meetings.  They can exchange documents, contribute to forums, participate in real time conferences and submit documents to our digital printing solution.  Parents can check on their childs attendance status, view library borrowing histories as well as being able to contribute to forums and participate in real time conferences.  Students can pick up and drop off homework and other school assignments.  They are able to participate in their own dedicated, but moderated forum.

Impact

SmartER Net allows staff, students and parents to access to information stores that were previously inaccessible outside the school.  Staff productivity has increased as a result of improved when needed access.  The appreciation of the positive benefits that technology can bring has been enhanced by our SmartER Net.
