FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

--->
Q: What does IWS mean?
A: IWS is the abbreviation of IntraWeb Studio

Q: What kind of server do I need?
A:

For the repository you will need a .NET enabled IIS server (Windows). For the actual Web sites any Web server will work, IWS produces plain html files in legacy mode. If the Web server is .NET enabled, then you can deploy using the advanced .NET mode of IWS (producing .iwp or aspx files)

Q: Where do I get a Server, if I don't have one?
A:

As Webserver that serves your Website you can use any known Web hoster that supports FTP uploads, and html files. (Windows, Linux, Unix or what ever). If you want to take advantage of the special dynamic features (like language recognition), then you need to choose a .NET enabled Windows server. (For Mono see below).

As Repository server you need a .NET enabled Windows server, which allows you to install a custom Web service. Basic hosting packages usually do not have that option. Ask your Web hoster, or select on of our approved IWS hosting services: IWS Hosting

Q: Do I need .NET on my server?
A: Only the repository server needs .NET to be installed. The Web server does not not need .NET.

Q: Is Linux / Mono supported?
A:

As Webserver you can use any Web server, Linux and Apache are supported that is.

For the Repository server and the IWS Client, we support Windows only currently. There are some efforts though to support Mono here as well, but we have not time frame for that yet.

Q: What is the difference between Personal/Desktop Editons and Professional/Enterprise Editions?
A:

Personal/Desktop are stand alone single user versions. The do not require an repository server to be installed.
Professional/Enterprise are multi-user client-server versions. They need an IWS Repository Server to be installed.
